Vic: Employer contribution to WorkCover goes up

MELBOURNE, April 11 AAP - Premiums paid by employers to Victoria's WorkCover insurance
scheme will rise from an average of 1.9 per cent to 2.18 per cent of wages, the Victorian
government has announced.

The Bracks government also restored the common law rights of injured workers to sue
negligent employers, effective from October 20, 1999.

Premier Steve Bracks said his government was meeting its election commitment to restore
common law rights, which were abolished by the previous Kennett government in November
1997.

However the decision will disappoint up to 5,000 workers who were injured since 1997
and who wanted the restoration of common law rights made retrospective to November 1997.
