Fed: Howard must stand aside Wooldridge: Beazley
Opposition leader KIM BEAZLEY has called for the Health Minister MICHAEL WOOLDRIDGE
to be stood aside.
Dr WOOLDRIDGE has been accused in parliament of letting slip at a medical dinner that
an Australian consortium was about to win a lucrative contract.
Although he hadn't said the name of the company, the information was enough to send
the share price of one of the companies in the consortium, biotechnology company Virax
Holdings, soaring.
Mr BEAZLEY says the Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD must act today to stand aside Dr WOOLDRIDGE.
The opposition leader also says the Prime Minister must direct the Australian Securities
Commission to examine the circumstances in which two medical consortiums shares rose
dramatically after the slip.
Mr BEAZLEY says it appears to be a situation of loose lips contributing to an opportunity
to raise share prices.
Dr WOOLDRIDGE has denied any role in the leaking of information about the $27 million
grant to the consortium.
The grant was given by the United States National Institute of Health in June last
year to develop an AIDS vaccine.
